Anger as Galloway is unveiled by Out camp

- By Daniel Martin Chief Political Correspondent

EUROSCEPTICS scored a massive own goal after unveiling George Galloway at a rally – leading to a walk-out by activists last night.

The hard-Left politician was introduced by Ukip leader Nigel Farage as a ‘towering figure’ at the Grassroots Out meeting in London, attended by up to ,000.

But scores left after the former Respect MP – who was expelled from Labour a decade ago after urging British troops to disobey their commanders in Iraq – started telling them that Brexit would allow the UK to build a new relationship with Iran.

One angry activist shouted: ‘He’s an antisemite; it’s disgusting.’ And Ukip MP Douglas Carswell, who is linked to the rival Vote Leave group, retweeted: ‘One way to lose all credibility. Invite Galloway. Unbelievable joke.’ Mr Farage later tweeted: ‘Electric atmosphere at Grassroots Out this evening. Left and Right uniting to get UK out of EU.’

But the decision to invite Mr Galloway will be seen as a massive mistake by many in the Leave camp. Grassroots Out is not the largest group campaigning for Brexit, but it has the support of Mr Farage and Tory MPs David Davis, Bill Cash and Peter Bone. It also has the backing of some Labour MPs such as Kate Hoey.

The other main group, Vote Leave, has more credibility and is expected to be the official ‘out’ campaign group during the referendum period.
