Cracking! £10 Tesco Easter egg beats posh rivals

- By Sean Poulter

LUXURY chocolatiers have been beaten in the Easter egg race – by a supermarket creation.

The Tesco treat has topped a blind taste test of more than 100 eggs which were tried by experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute.

And while it may be called the Billionaires Dynamite Easter Egg, at £10, it has a distinctly egalitarian price tag.

The chunky Belgian milk chocolate egg has pieces of honeycomb, chocolate coated shortcake and caramel fudge pieces that give it texture, flavour and crunch.

The institute, which gave the egg a score of 85 out of 100, described it as ‘ truly indulgent’, saying it impressed the testers with its ‘rich, creamy milk chocolate shell’.

And at £10 for a creation weighing a hefty 650g, the Tesco egg works out as good value compared with smaller and more expensive handmade versions.

Also highly praised was Stas Chocolatier, a specialist chocolate company from Kent, which won two categories.

With a score of 78, it was chosen as the winner of the Best for Sharing category with its 700g Stas Chocolatier Sweetie Egg.

But the egg, which is sold through Ocado, is more than three times the price of the Tesco one, at £30.

The same company, founded more than 50 years ago by specialist chocolate makers, also won the children’s category with its Easter Egg Head at £9.50 for 250g.

The egg, which scored 78, comes with eyes, nose, ears, eyebrows and mouth, which youngsters can stick on with an edible glue.

Meanwhile, voted Best for GrownUps, with a score of 81, was the Bettys Milk Chocolate Spring Flowers Egg at £25 for 350g.

And Best for Teens was the Chococo Milk Chocolate Honeycomb Easter Egg at £12 for 175g, which scored 77.
