Was Prince wrong to enter Brexit debate?

-

I WAS disappointed to read that Prince William is said to have shown himself to be in favour of Britain’s continuing membership of the EU — but I’m not surprised, given his father’s habit of writing so-called ‘black spider’ letters to those in authority. Neither William nor Charles is elected, and they enjoy substantial privileges at the taxpayers’ expense. Even to be perceived to be interfering in political matters has the potential to cause resentment. If members of the Royal Family are happy to renounce their titles and privileges and stand for election, we would be happy for them to seek to influence decision-making. DESPITE claims to the contrary, Prince william didn’t come out in favour of remaining in the EU in his speech at the Foreign Office last week. He stated that our partnership with international allies is the ‘bedrock of our security and prosperity’. The fact that the Duke of Cambridge didn’t mention the EU, when he did mention the UN and Nato, could, in fact, be considered a rejection of the EU — and his support for Brexit. But we have too much respect for the Prince to presume to put words into his mouth and drag him into the referendum debate. It’s a pity people should be convinced by the remain narrative that Brexit would result in increased isolation, when, in fact, quite the opposite is true.

PRINCE William should be more aware than many that it’s much better to work and cooperate with friends than remain stuck in an unhappy and disagreeable marriage. You shouldn’t need to marry someone just to gain their co-operation. We need an amicable divorce from our EU marriage, while remaining friends with our Continental neighbours.

Has it not dawned on Prince william that if the EU gets its way and becomes a single country, our monarchy will be finished? It aims to have a single head of state, its own armed forces and a common nationality — European. we’ll be relegated to a mere province. Let’s get out now, while we can.

MICHAEL JOSEPH, Warrington.
