Dodgy plastic surgeons face ban over BOGOF deals

- By Sophie Borland Health Editor

PLASTIC surgeons who fail to follow strict rules on patient consent and promotional deals face being struck off.

New guidelines say patients need to be given ‘reflection time’ before having cosmetic procedures, and must not be offered two-for-one style deals.

Experts say too many ‘extremely vulnerable’ patients, including many women, are being exploited by cowboy surgeons.

In the past ‘buy one get one free’ deals were used to lure in more customers. Mothers and daughters have even been targeted with four for the price of three breast implant offers.

But binding guidelines for all doctors, published by the Royal College of Surgeons and the General Medical Council, are banning such ‘BOGOF’ deals.

A doctor or surgeon wanting to carry out Botox fillers, breast enlargements or other nip-andtuck procedures must have the relevant certificates.

The new rules follow a major report by the NHS’s Medical Director in 2013 which warned many patients were being put at risk.

Professor Terence Stephenson, chairman of the GMC, said: ‘Our new guidance is designed to drive up standards in the cosmetic industry and make sure all patients are given the care, treatment and support they need.’
