DIET DESTROYERS
YOU could be adding calories without realising
HEALTHY FOOD: Vegetables
VEGETABLES are a dieter’s dream — most are virtually fat free and low in calories, so most diet plans allow them to be eaten freely. They are also bursting with nutrients. An 80g serving of broccoli, for example, provides 36 per cent of our daily folate, a B vitamin important for a healthy nervous system — and all for just 26 calories.
UNHEALTHY EXTRA: Olive oil
LIVENING up veg can be a challenge, so roasting peppers, courgettes, onions, aubergine and tomatoes can seem a good idea. But one tablespoon of oil has 100 calories — roughly the same as a two-finger Kit Kat.
If you do use oil, olive and rapeseed are best, as they contain the most heart- friendly monounsaturates — but to keep calories down, brush it on veg, rather than pouring from the bottle.
