THE Americans quickly imposed a 266 per cent tariff on Chinese steel to prevent dumping. Meanwhile, in the EU the bureaucratic wheels moved rather more slowly.

They took months before imposing a tariff which, in the end, was a derisory nine per cent of what the Americans had put in place.

Some 15,000 steel jobs brought under threat in the UK purely because we are members of this terminally failing organisation.
