NOW RULE THE WORLD
Sir Alex tells Master Willett: Dominate like my United
Masters champion Danny Willett will draw on advice from sir alex Ferguson as he trains his sights on becoming the world’s best golfer.
the former Manchester United manager, who was at augusta last week, was one of the first to congratulate the 28-year-old from sheffield after he became the first British winner of the green jacket for 20 years.
‘He gave me some brilliant advice,’ said Willett. ‘He told me at Man U they never looked back at what they achieved but always looked forward, and that as soon as they won a trophy that was it. the next morning you wake up and you start working hard on trying to win the next one.
‘He didn’t have to say that but it was great hearing it from a true winner’s point of view. It struck a chord because I’ve always said that it’s not about what you have done but what you can do, and I’m determined to
keep pushing forward.’ To that end, Willett will turn down hundreds of thousands of pounds in appearance fees in his bid to reach the summit. His manager Chubby Chandler said: ‘Danny could make a lot of money playing in certain events around the world but he will not be compromised by cash. ‘His schedule is not going to change one bit. He’s absolutely focused on that world No 1 spot and I believe he can make it. I think he could even win another major this year. Winning the Masters is not the end of the journey but the start.’ Willett didn’t get to bed until 6am yesterday but was still so full of adrenalin three hours later he went for a 20-minute run. ‘Although I was up late, I didn’t drink that much,’ he said. ‘We were just giggling most of the time because I’m not quite sure we could fathom exactly what had happened. It’s positively surreal. Now I’m looking forward to getting home and seeing the reaction. I’ve joined Sandy Lyle, Ian Woosnam and Sir Nick Faldo as the only British winners. That’s some company to keep, isn’t it?’ Willett now has a month at home with wife Nicole and baby son Zach, who was born a fortnight ago. His next tournament will be on the PGA Tour at the Players’ Championship in Florida next month, followed by the Irish Open and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
