Now Hodgson waits for Euro injury roll call

- By SAMI MOKBEL and MATT LAWTON

ROY HODGsON has delayed naming his england squad for the european Championship until Monday after being told that Danny welbeck will miss the tournament with a knee injury.

Hodgson, coaches ray lewington and Gary Neville plus england doctor Ian Beasley met at wembley yesterday with a view to naming the squad tomorrow.

But welbeck’s injury, which could even rule him out for the start of next season, has left the england manager with a major selection headache. It is complicated by the fact that liverpool’s Jordan Henderson is just returning to full training and the fear of more injuries on the final weekend of the Barclays Premier league.

losing welbeck is a major blow because he would almost certainly have featured in Hodgson’s starting line-up for the opening euro 2016 clash with russia on June 11.

Theo walcott would be the logical replacement as, like his team-mate, he can play wide and through the middle, but although Hodgson was impressed by the arsenal man during the previous international break, his lack of club action is not working in his favour. The england manager has spoken to Gunners boss arsene wenger about his concerns for walcott’s fitness. with andros Townsend involved in a relegation battle for Newcastle, it could open the door to Manchester United’s Jesse lingard, who, Sportsmail understands, was discussed in yesterday’s meeting.

everton’s Phil Jagielka is sweating on his place, with Hodgson considering taking seven instead of eight defenders, losing a centre back as midfielder eric Dier can also play in that position. Chris smalling, Gary Cahill and clubmate John stones are all ahead of Jagielka.

Hodgson may also ask the players he intends to name on standby to report to st George’s Park next wednesday, aware that he will not have the Manchester United and liverpool players involved in the fa Cup and europa league finals available for the friendly against Turkey on May 22. He prefers to train with 11 v 11 and simply won’t have enough players otherwise. l

CHELSEA boss Guus Hiddink says John Terry has not been poorly treated just because no decision has been taken on his future.

fans fear his departure will be managed as badly as those of ashley Cole and frank lampard. Terry is hoping for a new deal but it is unlikely he will add to his 703 appearances after his sending-off on saturday, which cost him a twomatch ban.

Hiddink said ‘ The people who are making the decisions want to take their time. That’s up to them. That doesn’t mean there’s dramatic, bad treatment. It is the same as ashley Cole and lampard — I don’t neglect the facts. But there is a strategy.’
