British girl is killed in holiday quad bike plunge

- By Andy Dolan

A BRITISH holidaymaker has died in Turkey after plunging off a road on a quad bike – just hours after posting a picture of herself on one of the machines.

Amarna Carthy, who had previously worked as a wedding planner in the resort of Fethiye, had captioned the photograph ‘missed this life’.

Miss Carthy, 21, was with her aunt on the bike, travelling at about 25mph, when they are understood to have pulled on to what they thought was the hard shoulder to let ‘agitated’ drivers pass them.

Instead, they careered down a steep verge. It is not known if the vehicle she was pictured on was the bike in the accident.

Miss Carthy is believed to have been wearing a helmet but died from head injuries on Tuesday.

Her 24- year- old aunt, Jakadi Clarke, who was at the controls, was taken to hospital with a fractured pelvis. Miss Carthy and Miss Clarke, of Gedling, Nottinghamshire, were on a week’s holiday and were scheduled to fly home on Wednesday.

Miss Carthy’s mother Tashaka Baumber, 39, flew out to the resort, a location in the James Bond film Skyfall, on Wednesday with her father Mark Carthy, 40.

Mrs Baumber, a mother of five, said: ‘Her friend rang me and said “she’s gone”. I thought she had been kidnapped and then he told me that she had died.

‘Time, everything – it all just stopped. It was unbelievable to hear those words.’

The family, who are Jehovah’s Witnesses, hope Mrs Baumber can fly home with her daughter’s body on Monday.

Miss Carthy described herself as co-founder – with her mother – of an online business selling health and well-being products. Other sites portray her as an ‘ actor, model and dancer’, and carry a series of modelling shots which appear to date back to her childhood.

In a chilling coincidence, Miss Carthy posted a still image on Facebook on Monday, the day before her death, apparently taken from a video of herself sliding down a hill on a quadbike in the rain. She captioned it ‘sorry mummy’.

She leaves four sisters – Kyanne, 12, Madison, six, and two-year-old twins Ada and Lylah. Miss Carthy was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The family have set-up fundraising pages on Just Giving to help fund bringing Miss Carthy’s body home, and repatriating injured Miss Clarke, who requires a specialist medical air transfer.

Cousin Shana-Louise Smalley, who studies photography at New College Nottingham, said that the tragedy ‘broke my heart into a million pieces’.
