Will Marks & Spencer ever get it right again?

-

THE ‘Mrs M&Ss’ of this world, the 35-andover target age group of the High Street store (Mail), are now more sophisticated and have a much younger appearance and outlook than they did in years gone by — when they were the stalwarts of the M&S customer base. Alas, M&S fashions just don’t reflect this.

DIANE SILVA, Lytham, Lancs. AT LONG last, M&s’s new boss, steve rowe, has pledged to give customers the fashion essentials they want, not ephemeral fads. Let’s ditch the likes of Alexa chung — core customers don’t identify with her — and bring back stylish, good-quality clothes. That’s what we’ve been asking for, but no one at M&s would listen. No wonder women’s wear wasn’t making a profit. The store should stop trying to attract the young — they’re just not interested — and go for those who are: women of 50-plus. We’re all waiting to spend our money in your store, Mr rowe — we’re breathless with anticipation! MARGARET BUCKINGHAM,

Sherborne, Dorset.

I NOW hate shopping for clothes. The enjoyment of buying something new, then taking it home in its own bag, has gone. Shops like M&S now ring up the item, sometimes fold it, then hand it to you with no packaging at all. And all because free plastic bags have been banned. Surely it is not beyond the wit of M&S to come up with a suitable bag? If low-budget Primark hand out paper bags with strong handles, surely the rest can work it out?

TRUDY DRAPER, Ashurst Wood, W. Sussex.
