Debts at law firms have jumped 36pc in the past year as Britain makes more legal transactio­ns and becomes more litigious, research shows.

Average debts rose from £28,000 to £38,000 per equity partner, according to accountanc­y firm Hazlewoods. It said firms were taking on debt in order to cope by hiring more staff and investing in computer systems.
