DO I REALLY NEED?
This week: Nurofen sinus Pain Relief (£5.49 for 16 tablets) THIS combines ibuprofen with the decongestant phenylephrine hydrochloride. The dual action is said to reduce inflammation, helping patients breathe more easily, as well as providing relief from symptoms such as fever and headache.
EXPERT VERDICT: Patients with a genuine sinus headache would be much better off with a stronger decongestant, pseudoephedrine, available only from pharmacy counters and not in overthe-counter products, says Martin Astbury, a pharmacist in West Kirby and former president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
‘The pharmacy strength tablets also work out cheaper — £2.99 for 12. You can buy paracetamol or ibuprofen separately — a pack of 16 for 20p — which work just as well.
‘Some people prefer combination pills because it’s easier, despite being more expensive and less effective.’
