HOW to treat everyday ailments. this week: Conjunctiv­itis THIS is caused by a bacterial infection or virus — or by the eye being irritated by, for example, shampoo or chlorinate­d water.

STEP ONE: Boil a litre of water and allow to cool. Add 1 tbsp of boric acid, from pharmacist­s. STEP TWO: Use a clean washcloth or cotton-wool ball dipped in the water to gently rinse the eye.

STEP THREE: Brew camomile tea, which is antiseptic and anti-inflammato­ry.

STEP FOUR: Place a moist tea bag on each closed eye for 10 minutes every two hours.
