FA honour the fallen
THE FA certainly can’t be accused of ignoring military history. In Miami before the last World Cup there was a sizeable contingent at a church service marking the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. And today FA chief executive Martin Glenn will be at the Thiepval Memorial near the Somme to honour the First World War dead.
July 1 saw the most Somme casualties and on the 100th anniversary of that date, England could be playing at Lille — only 50 miles from the battleground — in a quarter-final. At least it cannot be against the Germans.
BBC 5 Live have been making great play of covering every game of Euro 2016. What they haven’t announced is the number of matches that will be called off the television, normally a favourite tactic of rivals talkSPORT. A BBC spokesman said it would be in single figures.
