Domino’s set for summer of sport with 65 new shops

WHiLe many chief executives are fretting about what direction the economy will take in the next few weeks, domino’s pizza chain has a very clear idea about what households will be up to – eating pizza and watching sport.

The chain has launched a major expansion drive to cope with an expected boom in demand over the euro 2016 football championsh­ip and the rio Olympics.

Britain’s largest takeaway firm will open 65 stores and hire 10,000 more staff as it expects orders to top three-a- second during the period.

domino’s has had a bumper 12 months with profits rising 18pc in march on the back of falling cheese prices and the popularity of new technology. its app means diners are able to order their favourite pizzas without having to shift from the sofa to turn on a computer or walk down the High Street. a large chunk of its pizzas are sold from the app, which accounts for nearly half of online sales. Online sales account for three-quarters of all sales.

The shares increased 0.8pc or 8p to 1067p after chief executive david Wild said: ‘We think 2016 is a bumper year for domino’s. We’ll serve up over seven million pizzas during the euros alone.’

The jobs are being made available at every level, from delivery drivers to pizza chefs. around 1,400 will come from London, 1,900 in the South east, 1,300 in the North east and others in yorkshire, Wales and Scotland.

it expects 160 pizzas to be ordered every minute of every day during the tournament and more than 50m slices to be eaten. The firm has been a phenomenal success story with the shares up 156pc since 2012.

domino’s holds the exclusive master franchise from its american sister company.

it owns, operates and franchises domino’s Pizza in the UK, ireland, Germany, Switzerlan­d, Liechtenst­ein and Luxembourg.

The first UK store opened in Luton in 1985. Founded in 1960 the wider domino’s group has 11,000 stores in over 70 internatio­nal markets.

The UK firm has paid former england boss Kevin Keegan to present the first 11 of the new workers with caps similar to the caps given to internatio­nal players.
