Edwards seeks revenge on old tenant Hart

- LAURIE WHITWELL

JOE HART may be an expert in organising a defence but Wales midfielder Dave Edwards can remember a time when the England goalkeeper would leave his room a mess. Edwards was Hart’s landlord during their days together at Shrewsbury Town and the two have remained good friends. Their careers have taken different paths but interchanged at various points and will do so again in Lens on Thursday when the Home Nations collide. Edwards, the Wolves player, is eager to start his second game at Euro 2016 having scored past the Manchester City No 1 at Molineux six years ago. He would look to create as much disorder in England’s box as once was the case in their shared house. ‘We lived in a little two-bed terrace which was my first home in Shrewsbury,’ said Edwards. ‘He rented a room off me. I was 18, 19 when we lived together for just over a year until he signed for Man City. He was a messy housemate. ‘I remember the time a few sponsors were trying to get hold of him so there were boxes of clothes everywhere. I would go and rob them but they were too big for me. The house didn’t have a dishwasher so he used to stack them up and I used to clean them. We still are very good friends. To think we were in that situation and may now play each other in the Euros, it is amazing. It’s great for the Shrewsbury youth system and for the town. ‘I spoke to him last Wednesday and we wished each other luck.’ Wales are top of Group B after beating Slovakia and can put England on the ropes with victory. ‘Hopefully Joe will have a busy night,’ said Edwards. ‘It would be great for me personally to start and get on the scoresheet. I scored the winner against him at Molineux against City so it would be nice to do it again.’
