- By Claire Ellicott

THE exams were over, studies had finished for the summer and it was time for these Cambridge University students to let their hair down.

Despite quaffing champagne until dawn, most of revellers managed to look surprisingly fresh-faced yesterday as they made their way home from the famous Trinity May Ball.

Many of the young women abandoned their high heels and hoisted their skirts to avoid the puddles. Several braved the morning chill without a coat over low-cut, thigh-split dresses.

event on Monday night but the annual Trinity May Ball, which was celebrating its 150th anniversary, was the biggest.

The 1,800 guests paid up to £530 a couple to enjoy a champagne reception and five-course meal served in Trinity Great Hall, or tuck into oysters and a hog roast in the courtyard, plus music and dancing. Drinks were served from a punt on the river and there was a spectacular fireworks display.

Despite being known as May Balls, the Cambridge events have been held in June for more than a century.
