SIN BIN FOR ITALIANS?
ITALY have always had a pragmatic approach and watching them beat Belgium on Monday showed this team is no different than their predecessors. Giorgio Chiellini, Eder, Leonardo Bonucci and Thiago Motta all committed cynical fouls are were rightly booked. Would the removal of players into a sin bin for 10 minutes be a better deterrent? Well, if reduced to 10 players, colleagues would be less likely to risk more fouls but might close ranks and pack the defence, ruining the game as a spectacle. UEFA have tried to counter the cynical approach with a one-match ban for players who receive two yellow cards up to and including the quarter-final. But if the Italians are on course for qualification in their second match against Sweden, why not sacrifice a player for the last group match against the Republic of Ireland? There’s little UEFA can do about it. Maybe sin bins are a good idea after all...
