Xhaka’s physicality and skill stand out
SWITZERLAND are the obvious favourites for this match, but after seeing them make hard work of their 1-0 win over Albania I wouldn’t write off Romania.
It was only Switzerland’s second ever European Championship victory and they weren’t entirely convincing. But you have to think that, given the talent in their ranks, there is more to come.
New Arsenal signing Granit Xhaka really stood out in the centre of midfield. I hadn’t realised how physical he is, but he’s also very good on the ball — making 115 passes when no one else managed more than 78.
We know all about Xherdan Shaqiri from his exploits with Stoke, and Watford’s Valon Behrami adds some extra bite in midfield.
It took a wonderful strike from Dimitri Payet to beat Romania in the opening game and they competed really well against France. They put the hosts under a lot of pressure and created nervousness on their big night. VERDICT: Switzerland win. KEY STAT: In the opening game against France, Romania conceded as many goals as they did over the whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2016. BIG MATCH BET: Romania will fancy their chances of beating Albania at the weekend so avoiding defeat and staying alive is the name of the game in this one. A draw with both teams scoring is 19-5.
