In Their Own Words, 9pm, PBS America MUHAMMAD ALI is the first subject in a stylishly edited new profile series that places its subjects firmly in a historical context. It’s an agreeable mix of crowd-pleasing footage of Ali and thought-provoking observations on his life.
GRITTY DRAMA
Happy Valley, 9pm, W THE gripping — and occasionally very disturbing — BBC drama stars Sarah Lancashire as a police sergeant whose personal and professional lives become uncomfortably intertwined. This is a repeat from the start of series one, which is also available on Netflix.
FASCINATING HISTORY
Million Dollar Princesses, 9pm, ITV3 ELIZABETH MCGOVERN explores the lives of American heiresses who, like her character in Downton Abbey, made waves in Britain. For the first in the series, the focus is on Nancy Astor, who became the first woman MP to take her seat in Parliament, in 1919.
BEAR IS BACK
Running Wild With Bear Grylls, 9pm, Discovery BEAR is back, dragging more stars through the wringer of outdoor adventure. Nick Jonas — once of the Jonas Brothers, now solo — is his first victim, but could the tables be turned for their trip to the Sierra Nevada mountains? ‘I want to challenge Bear,’ says Jonas. Barbarians Rising, 10pm, History BOUDICA, Attila, Spartacus… This fanciful new docudrama series tells the stories of outsiders who fought the Roman Empire. It’s hammy, but there’s fun in that – first up is Hannibal, who, with the help of his elephants, wants to stick it to those nasty Romans.
MAD MOVIE
Frank, 10.40pm, Film4 FEW films truly deserve the label surreal, but this fictional journey into the life of odd act Frank Sidebottom (pictured) comes close. Domhnall Gleeson is the naive songwriter hooking up with him.
