Gwynnie in a pinny at birthday bake-off

IT’S hard to imagine what Gwyneth Paltrow can possibly be making at this cookery class, having recently advocated a diet that cut out sugar, alcohol, caffeine, red meat, gluten and dairy.

Nevertheless it seems the actress has a taste for traditional baking – as well as the gruelling detox plans posted on her lifestyle website Goop.

Wearing a chef’s apron and with a tea towel slung over her shoulder, Miss Paltrow was pictured engrossed in the class to celebrate actress Cameron Diaz’s 44th birthday this week.

Also in attendance was Nicole Richie, 34, daughter of singer Lionel, and Miss Diaz’s husband, rock star Benji Madden, whose brother Joel is married to Miss Richie.

It’s not clear what the friends were making at New School of Cooking in Culver City, California, although a pepper mill in the hands of another attendee suggest it was a savoury treat. Pupils at the school can take classes in everything from making noodles and jams to baking cakes and pizzas, as well as healthy eating sessions. But they are unlikely to chime with Miss Paltrow’s strict standards.

A post on Goop earlier this year suggested followers eat a diet of mainly fruit and vegetables to give the ‘guts a break, and strip off a few extra pounds’.

Miss Paltrow, 43, has also published three recipe books detailing supposedly healthy concoctions such as a smoothie containing ‘moon dust’ and ‘vanilla mushroom protein powder’.

However, Miss Diaz is something of a kindred spirit, having penned two health and lifestyle books. In a recent interview she said: ‘Since my mid-30s I’ve been conscientious about my eating and good nutrition.’
