Wearing an eye mask could prevent post-op delirium
EYE masks and ear plugs are being tested as a way to prevent delirium after surgery.
Delirium leads to confusion and poor short- term memory; patients may also suffer hallucinations.
The exact cause is unknown, but changes in the balance of brain chemicals, possibly due to inflammation from surgery or the effects of the anaesthesia, could play a role. Bright hospital lighting and noisy wards may increase the risk because they contribute to disorientation.
The removal of patients’ glasses and hearing aids may also play a part.
In a new trial, scientists at the Boston Medical Center will give eye masks and ear plugs to 100 patients after surgery to see if this helps stop the disorientation.
