TABLEWARE TRICKS

-

THE shape, size and colour of your crockery, cutlery and cups can influence how much you eat and drink, research suggests. This week: Drink red wine from a clear glass THE colour of your glassware can impact on the amount you drink.

Drinking white wine from a transparent glass, for example, can mean you consume 9.2 per cent more than you would if you were drinking red wine from the same glass.

That’s because there is no colour contrast to help you monitor how much you’re drinking, researchers at Iowa State University found in 2013. Drinkers also tend to pour 12.2 per cent more wine into glasses that they hold, compared with those that are rested on a table. This is because their hands don’t hide how much is being poured into the glass on the table and it’s easier to pour steadily, the same study, published in the journal Substance Use & Misuse, found.
