NO Surprise that Victoria is beating Poldark in the TV ratings. As Demelza walked wistfully along the clifftop for what seemed like the tenth time, with soaring music as an accompaniment, I had a sudden fit of the giggles, imagining French & Saunders taking the mickey out of the whole thing.

These days, hairy chests, passionate embraces and long kisses are what passes for TV drama.

‘Comedy’ consists of long drawn-out monologues punctuated with swearing. If it wasn’t for the canned laughter we wouldn’t know when to laugh.

As for light entertainment, it’s just talent contests in front of judges who are more interested in themselves than the parade of wannabes who couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.

And reality programmes aim principally to humiliate and embarrass contestants, all in the name of entertainment.
