New Stephen Lawrence appeal sparks 30 fresh calls
DETECTIVES in the Stephen Lawrence murder inquiry have received ‘significant information’ after a fresh appeal.
The investigation team has taken ‘up to 30 calls’ in response to a reconstruction which aired on Crimewatch on Monday night.
Police are attempting to identify a woman whose DNA was found on a bag strap recovered from the scene where A-level student Mr Lawrence, 18, was stabbed to death in Eltham, east London, on April 22, 1993.
Detectives are also appealing for information about another possible witness – a man reportedly seen in a green jacket with a V emblem near Well Hall Road roundabout at around the time Mr Lawrence was attacked.
Chris Le Pere, the senior investigator in the case, said yesterday: ‘Given the length of time this inquiry has been running, I am happy with the positive result.
‘Some of the calls hold significant information, and will take time to work through.’
He also appealed for a male who rang Crimewatch and Crimestoppers in 2013 to contact the incident room on 020 8785 8310.
Police are offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading to a prosecution.
Mr Lawrence was stabbed to death by up to six white men in an unprovoked racist attack as he waited at a bus stop with a friend.
In 2012, Gary Dobson and David Norris were found guilty of being involved in the attack and jailed.
