Warren’s ‘disgust’ at Eubank

- By JEFF POWELL

FRANK WARREN, in the midst of negotiating Gennady Golovkin’s February return to London for a world middleweight title unification battle with Billy Joe Saunders, has condemned Chris Eubank Jnr for mocking Kell Brook for his defeat at the fists of the Kazakh KO king. Brook’s trainer Dominic Ingle threw in the towel in the fifth round of Saturday’s battering by Golovkin at London’s O2 Arena. The socket of Brook’s right eye was fractured and Ingle’s act has been widely praised for saving his career. Not by Eubank, who purports to be seeking a fight with Golovkin and tweeted: ‘My corner don’t own towels.’ Of that remark, Warren said: ‘It’s disgusting. If the fight had gone any longer Brook would have had a serious problem down the line.’ Eubank and his father, Chris Snr, have attempted to explain away the tweet, but that has incensed Warren all the more. In reference to Michael Watson being paralysed in a fight with the elder Eubank and recently his son inflicting brain damage on Nick Blackwell, Warren says: ‘How can they say these things after being involved in those fights? Old Chris is an imbecile . . . they keep talking about how they want to fight the likes of Golovkin but then back out.’ Eubank Jnr, who did lose to WBO champ Saunders, defends his British title against Tommy Langford on October 22, a week before Billy Joe fights a soon-to-be-named challenger on the undercard of the Fury-Klitschko rematch in preparation for meeting Golovkin in February. Golovkin is due to face Daniel Jacobs, probably in November.
