Evans: I stopped sex with accuser when I remembered fiancee

- By Ben Wilkinson

FOOTBALLER Ched Evans has told a court he got ‘ caught up in the moment’ and forgot about his girlfriend when he started having sex with the teenage waitress accusing him of rape.

The striker said he walked into a hotel room he was sharing with a teammate without knocking and found his friend and the teenager naked.

Evans began having sex with the 19-year-old and only stopped when it struck him that he was cheating on girlfriend Natasha Massey, who is now his fiancée, he told jurors.

He then left the room through a fire escape.

The alleged victim says she has no memory of what happened at the hotel and is convinced her drink was spiked.

But Evans took the witness stand at Cardiff Crown Court yesterday to deny raping her at a Premier Inn after a night out in Rhyl, North Wales, in 2011. He is on trial for the second time after successfully appealing against his conviction for rape.

His retrial heard how his former Manchester City teammate Clayton McDonald took the girl back to the hotel and was joined by Evans after sending him a message saying: ‘I’ve got a bird.’

Evans’ younger brother and a friend watched through a window, the court was told. Evans, now 27 and a player for Chesterfield, said Mr McDonald asked the waitress if he (Evans) could ‘join in’ and she looked at him and said yes. He claimed she then ‘took the lead’ during sex, adding: ‘She was making noises like she was enjoying herself.’

The footballer said Mr McDonald had then left him with the woman before he too then left the hotel room through the fire escape.

When asked why he left by his barrister Judy Khan QC, he said: ‘The situation I was in became real that I was cheating on my girlfriend.’ Asked if he had considered Miss Massey beforehand, Evans said: ‘No, I was caught up in the moment.’

Evans confirmed to the court that he was in a relationship with Miss Massey at the time and that they are still together and have a nine-month-old son.

He said they had plans to have more children and get married. Jurors were also shown CCTV from a kebab shop yesterday that showed Evans step over the girl and point her out to Mr McDonald after she fell over.

During cross-examining, Prosecutor Simon Medland QC said to the footballer: ‘You were having unprotected sex with her, together with another male in a hotel room, with other people looking on and you never even knew her name.’

Evans said: ‘Looking back my behaviour was not the best and on reflection I shouldn’t have behaved that way.’

He insisted that the young woman was not too drunk to consent, adding: ‘I’d say she was about the same as me. I was drunk but in control.’

Evans also said he had had another threesome with Mr McDonald around two years earlier, adding: ‘We just went to a girl’s house and we were playing strip poker and things just escalated.

‘We basically had a threesome. It was all consensual and no one had been drinking.’

The trial continues.
