Theresa Maynia!
Selfies and autographs on the red carpet as PM works the crowd
She shared the red carpet with some of the biggest names in showbusiness.
Yet Theresa May’s star quality outshone every celebrity at the Pride Of Britain Awards last night.
The Prime Minister worked the crowds like a true A-lister, signing autographs for fans and happily accepting countless requests for selfies. Mrs May, 60, rubbed shoulders with the likes of Dame Joan Collins, Sir Tom Jones, Dame Maggie Smith, Mary Berry and Bake Off winner Candice Brown at the annual awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
Arriving with husband Philip, 59, she posed for photographers in a £595 Luna midnight blue short dress by Amanda Wakeley teamed with a pair of blue Bellucci pumps from Dolce & Gabbana which also cost £595.
At the ceremony, hosted by Carol Vorderman, Mrs May presented the lifetime achievement award to Professor Stephen Hawking, telling the audience: ‘ There is nothing theoretical about his genius.’
Receiving the award, Professor Hawking said: ‘Thank you Prime Minister for those very kind words. I deal with very difficult mathematical questions every day but please don’t ask me to help with Brexit.’
Sir Cliff Richard made his first major public appearance in two years at the event. Accompanied by his close friend Gloria Hunniford, he described being back on the red carpet as ‘all part of my therapy’ following unfounded child abuse claims against him.
The 76-year-old was greeted by Prince Charles, who like Sir Cliff was presenting one of the awards, given to people who have turned their life around against the odds. In 2014, the BBC broadcast live helicopter footage of the singer’s Berkshire home being raided by police investigating allegations of historical child sex abuse.
The case was dropped in June due to a lack of evidence.
Sir Cliff, who is suing South Yorkshire Police and the BBC for damages, told Sky News last night: ‘It’s been difficult but I’ve known all along that I had enormous support.
‘It’s difficult to explain how it felt but now I feel fantastic and I’m back here doing what I normally do and it’s just a wonderful feeling.
‘This is all part of my therapy and so far I’m coming out of it really well.’
