Scientology wrecked my relationship says Mariah

- By Alisha Rouse

MARIAH Carey is blaming Scientology for the collapse of her engagement to billionaire James Packer, it was reported last night.

The singer claims the relationship was ‘ poisoned’ by his business manager Tommy Davis, who was once the church’s official spokesman.

Australian businessman Mr Packer was a Scientologist for four years after being introduced to the religion by Tom Cruise.

Sources told New York website Page Six: ‘Mariah and James were looking at homes in Beverly Hills to buy together in August, everything was fine, he was saying she was his soulmate, and he couldn’t wait to marry her.

‘ Then suddenly he changed. In September, James suddenly seemed not like himself at all. Mariah is suspicious of Tommy, who has been managing James’ finances, and she suspects he is controlling him.’

Miss Carey, 46, and Mr Packer split after a blazing row on board the billionaire’s yacht in Greece in September.

Rumours have swirled since the cou- ple’s break-up came to light last month. Mr Packer was claimed to be uneasy about her reality television show, with other sources saying her ‘excessive spending’ played a role.

Reports also claimed Miss Carey’s friendship with backing dancer Bryan Tanaka made the casino tycoon jealous. The singer’s representatives have denied any infidelity or that excessive spending played a role in the split.

There are claims the singer is demanding a £40million settlement as the couple begin ‘separation talks’.

It is understood Mr Packer was a practising Scientologist until 2006.

Mission Impossible actor Cruise is a long-time member.

The religion, founded by science fiction author L Ron Hubbard, has come under the spotlight in recent weeks. A new documentary by Louis Theroux makes claims of systematic abuse, which have been denied by the church.
