LEARNING TO STAND TALLER
her early days in the spotlight were notable for her hunched shoulders.
As she’s risen to power, she has started standing up straighter, holding her shoulders back and her head higher.
Postural alignment expert Nicole Parsons suspects she could have had training with a physiotherapist.
‘ It’s obvious to see the attitudinal change that comes purely from increased confidence,’ she says. ‘The thing that gave away her years of desk work [she worked in the City before entering politics] is her hand position.
‘In photographs from 2009 and even 2012, the back of her hand is facing forward. This is an indication of her shoulder joint rolling forward.’
Now, by contrast, she stands straighter and appears unafraid to show off her 5ft 8in frame.
All that remains is a slight stoop. Posture expert roger Golten says this may be an attempt to appear shorter when standing next to her husband, who is 5ft 7in, or a side-effect of wearing kitten heels.
‘When you wear heels, everything tilts forward,’ he says. ‘To compensate, you thrust your hips forward and lean back from the waist, which makes your neck jut forward and your head go back.’
