Look at all the options when choosing care
EVERY day, more than 450 people in Britain make the decision to move into a residential care or nursing home and begin the process of choosing the right one for them.
It’s important to look at all the options. Some care homes provide assisted living cottages and apartments, for those looking for independence, with excellent care and help available when required.
Others are more geared to caring for dependent, full-time residents and providing specialist dementia facilities.
Asking for a brochure is a good place to start. It is difficult for care homes to tell you exact prices until a full assessment has been made, but they should be able to tell you their price ranges.
Visit care homes you are considering, using the Age UK checklist to compare facilities, staff, meals and activities, as well as atmosphere and friendliness.
Once you have made your decision, book a time for an assessment to be made. The care home will want to understand your requirements and preferences.
Then plan your transition. Good care homes will encourage residents to bring their own favourite pieces of furniture and possessions to help them create familiar and comfortable surroundings, while staff will be keen to work closely with families.
Another option is home care, offering extra help around the home. Welltrained staff can help with everything from personal and night care to general support and companionship.
They can help around the home with some light cleaning and even assist with the weekly shop, preparing meals or accompanying you to and from hospital and other appointments.
