Naomi and a night of fashion faux pas
It was supposed to be the biggest evening in British fashion.
But last night’s ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall looked more like the night that fashion forgot.
Supermodels, celebrities and stars from around the world arrived at the iconic venue for the Fashion Awards sporting an array of creative and eye- catching outfits – with mixed results.
Singer Nicole Scherzinger left little to the imagination in a metallic catsuit with a choker neckline, large cut-
outs and a cape. The 38-yearold X Factor judge completed her look with bold silver jewellery and platform heels.
Model Alexa Chung, 33, who recently began designing collections for Marks & Spencer, turned heads in a golden embellished, Chinese-influenced two-piece.
Supermodel Naomi Campbell, 46, opted for a sheer dress with a fitted body suit underneath. And Salma Hayek, Laura Bailey and Livia Firth all chose floor-length, vibrant dresses with eyecatching floral prints that were not a complete success.
Mexican-American actress Miss Hayek, 50, wore a lowcut gown with unusual flared shoulder pads, while Miss Bailey, 44, paired her voluminous gown with dramatic dark eye make-up.
Mrs Firth, 47, wife of actor Colin Firth and global ambassador for Oxfam and director of Eco-Age, had her hair tied back in a low ponytail.
As befits an actress who has just been playing a young Queen Victoria on our TV screens, Jenna Coleman brought a touch more class to proceedings.
The 30- year- old chose a floor- length period- style gown emblazoned with pale blue flowers and scooped up her hair in a similar fashion to her on-screen character.
With ruffled sleeves and a high collar, the quirky number also showed a very un-Victorian flash of cleavage.
Gigi Hadid, 21 – who was hard to miss in an intricately designed silver jumpsuit with an off-the- shoulder detail – beat her younger sister Bella to be named international model of the year.
David Beckham presented the outstanding achievement award to veteran American designer Ralph Lauren.
And the Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite design house Alexander McQueen was named British brand of the year, with creative director Sarah Burton accepting the accolade.
The Fashion Awards, held annually in partnership with Swarovski, celebrate an eclectic mix of British and international talent.
This year the event will raise funds for the British Fashion Council’s Education Foundation charity to provide scholarships to help promising young designers into fashion college. Fashion verdicts by Daily Mail style editor Dinah van Tulleken
