What utter recklessness! Driver holds phone with both hands AND watches her iPad on dashboard

- By Arthur Martin

EYES glued to her phone, this driver takes both hands off the wheel to use her mobile phone in rush-hour traffic.

Astonishingly, she also appears to be watching a video on an iPad lodged in front of the speedometer.

The footage was captured by a camera mounted on the helmet of a motorcyclist as he drove home.

Appalled, the biker passed his footage over to Scotland Yard for officers to examine. The witness, known only as Adrian, said he thought the woman was either playing a game or texting on her phone. At the time, the driver’s silver Skoda Fabia was in the middle lane of the three-lane A501 in Marylebone, London, at 6pm. The 58-year-old biker, a freelance television line manager from North London, said: ‘I’m frequently shocked by the behaviour of some drivers... but this was just astonishing.

‘When I first approached her I couldn’t really believe what I was seeing. It looked like she was watching a programme or a video on the iPad, while also playing a game or texting on her phone. She was stationary at first but did move off after a while. I stayed back so I could get her number plate. We all get frustrated sitting in a traffic jam but what this woman was doing was crazy. She had her eyes down the whole time.’

Adrian’s footage later shows the driver fumbling for her gearstick as she starts to move with the tablet still obscuring the dashboard display. He said the woman seemed oblivious to the fact she had been filmed breaking the law. The father of two added: ‘Normally I wouldn’t report this sort of thing because the assumption is that nothing will get done. But the footage was so clear I felt like I had to. Maybe she won’t get a punishment, but if she at least gets a knock on the door, it might stop her doing it again.’

The Metropolitan Police said the force was aware of the incident, which took place on October 6, and would study Adrian’s footage. It emerged after the Daily Mail successfully campaigned for tougher penalties for those caught using their mobile behind the wheel.

Earlier this week a policewoman was photographed holding her mobile phone as she changed gear in a marked police car. END THE MOBILE MADNESS
