Greedy pup that ate an 8-inch knife ... and lived!

- Daily Mail Reporter

WHEN Macie the puppy started making an unusual sound one night, her owner thought she must have swallowed one of her squeaky toys.

But after rushing her to the vet’s, to everyone’s utter astonishment, X- rays revealed an eight-inch long knife lodged inside the inquisitive 12-week- old Staffordshire bull terrier.

The knife’s plastic handle had passed straight through the puppy’s stomach and into her intestines, while the tip of the blade was still in her gullet.

Vets warned Macie’s owner Irene Paisley, from Glasgow, that she may not survive.

Thankfully, after operating, the out-of-hours-team from the veterinary charity PDSA were able to remove the knife – which was half the length of Macie’s body.

Yesterday, PDSA vet Emily Ronald said: ‘I’ve never seen an X-ray like Macie’s. She was extremely lucky to survive.

‘Her saving grace was that she swallowed the handle-end first – the blade-end would undoubtedly have pierced her organs, likely causing fatal injuries.’

Mother-of-four Miss Paisley, 46, said: ‘I couldn’t believe it when they said Macie had swallowed a knife. I have no idea where she got hold of it – she could have pinched it out of the dishwasher.

‘None of us could sleep that night as we knew Macie might not survive. The thought of losing her was devastating.’

After the operation, the puppy was back to her old self, playing as if nothing had happened the very next day.

Macie is now safely back at home after her ordeal, which happened on December 29 – and is not allowed anywhere near the dishwasher.
