B&B? British & Best! Dorset couple take the crown in world top 10
it is a five-minute walk from Dorset’s spectacular Jurassic coast and promises, guests say, ‘the best breakfast on Mother Earth’.
in fact, almost 1,000 visitors have left glowing reviews praising Bindon Bottom as the perfect B&B.
now the five-bedroom Victorian guest house has beaten international competition to be voted the best in the world by travel website tripadvisor.
the B&B in West lulworth, Dorset, beat competition from the Us, italy, the czech Republic and Belgium to the top prize, which is based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews.
Four other British B&Bs also made the top ten: south lodge guest house in yorkshire, which came third; swallows Rest in northamptonshire; thornleigh guest house in cumbria; and West by Five guest house in st ives, cornwall.
some 929 guests have left glittering fivestar reviews on tripadvisor describing Bindon Bottom as a ‘jewel of a B&B’ whose owners, clive and lisa Orchard, ‘desperately want their visitors to have the best time possible’.
they said Mr Orchard, 59, cooks a mean eggs benedict and have praised the range of organic toiletries on offer.
Others lauded Bindon Bottom as the perfect location for a walk along Dorset’s rugged coastline or a visit to the beach at picturesque lulworth cove, between swanage and Weymouth.
guests are greeted with brownies, flapjacks and chocolate in their bedrooms, all homemade by Mrs Orchard, and the calming scent of essential oils in the hall.
as well as king-size beds, the five bedrooms offer power showers, fresh coffee, biscuits and original fireplaces. Each room
‘Outstanding breakfasts’
is named after a literary figure and prices range from £90 for a night in the Barnes Room, named after Dorset poet William Barnes, to £130 for the hardy room with views of the rolling hills. the B&B, one of 18 in the area, previously won the tripadvisor award in 2014.
One reviewer wrote in October: ‘clive and lisa are fantastic hosts and provide everything you could possibly need. We particularly appreciated the filtered water, fresh milk and homemade bakes as well as clive’s outstanding breakfasts and lisa’s excellent local knowledge.’
another wrote: ‘ the house is beautiful, the rooms are tasteful and you are provided with fantastic tea and coffee making facilities. clive and lisa are very friendly, helpful and welcoming.’
Mr and Mrs Orchard said: ‘helping our guests to have the best possible experience of Dorset is of utmost importance to us, and so it’s genuinely heart-warming to be recognised by them for what we do.’
the Bindon Bottom beat the Modello Resort in Palermo, italy, which offers its guests private sailboat excursions into the Mediterranean, and the Welsh hills inn in Ohio, where guests get their own outdoor heated pool and hot tub, a fishing pond and clay shooting range.
VisitEngland chief executive sally Balcombe said: ‘it is fantastic news that five of England’s B&Bs are rated by travellers in the top ten globally, including the top spot.’
