JANSSEN IS NO FLOP, SAYS POCH

- By KIERAN GILL

Cup call: Vincent Janssen MAURICIO POCHETTINO says it is wrong to label Vincent Janssen a £17million flop as he turns to the struggling Tottenham striker at White Hart Lane today. With Harry Kane injured for the visit of League Two Wycombe in the FA Cup fourth round, Janssen will make his first appearance since Spurs’ third-round clash with Aston Villa. Janssen, 22, disappointed that day and was substituted after an hour with the game goalless. He was then left out of Pochettino’s next two Premier League squads but the Tottenham manager said: ‘It is not an issue. Janssen is not in his best moment but he is young, it’s his first season and we’ve had a lot of chats with him. ‘It’s normal, it’s all new for him and he needs to be relaxed, train hard, try to improve and when he has the opportunity to play, show his quality. But it is not a major issue.’ Janssen has three goals this season (all penalties) in 23 matches — two in the EFL Cup and one in the Premier League. Asked if he expects Janssen to score against Wycombe, Pochettino said: ‘We will see. The most important thing is we believe in him and trust in him. ‘It is not because in the last few months he has struggled a little in his performances that created doubts in us. If he has the possibility to play he is ready to give his best. ‘If not, he must wait on the bench for another opportunity but I have no doubts about him.’ A game such as this could help the Holland striker convince fans still unsure of his ability. Pochettino added: ‘If you want to be long term in Tottenham, and deserve to wear the shirt, it’s a great opportunity to show it on Saturday.’
