- CHRISTOPHER STEVENS

DOWNTON ABBEY (ITV): In 2013, lady’s maid Anna Bates (Joanne Froggatt) was raped in the boot room. Writer Julian Fellowes said sexual assaults were a danger for servants.

BROOKSIDE (Channel 4): Sheila Grant was raped by a taxi driver in the Eighties soap. Sue Johnston, who played the role, said: ‘I was adamant we shouldn’t just produce a sensationalist piece of television.’

GAME OF THRONES (Sky Atlantic): Out of many rapes, the one that provoked most outcry was the attack on teenage bride Sansa (Sophie Turner) by her husband.

CALL THE MIDWIFE (BBC1): Timid Sister Mary Cynthia (Bryony Hannah) was brutally attacked at night after delivering a baby.

HAPPY VALLEY (BBC1): Police Sgt Catherine Cawood’s daughter had been raped, and killed herself. Cawood must look after her grandson, whose father is in prison.

EASTENDERS (BBC1): Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) raped his brother’s wife Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) in 2014. He later tried to rape his girlfriend. He was acquitted in court, but was exiled by his family.

THE FALL (BBC2): Rape and murder were glamorised in this seedy show, which treated sex crime like a music video.

CORONATION STREET (ITV): In 2011, factory boss Carla Connor (Alison King) was raped by her fiance, who confronted her outside court. The show apologised after warnings this might deter women from reporting crimes.

MAD MEN (HBO): Office manager Joan (Christina Hendricks) was bullied and bribed by her bosses into having sex with a client.

PEAKY BLINDERS (BBC2): Matriarch Polly (Helen McCrory) was raped by Major Chester Campbell (Sam Neill). She later killed him.
