I WONDER if Cardiff Metropolitan University (Mail) is aware of the blatant sexism in the French language? The pronoun for a group of men or masculine objects is ‘ils’ and for a group of women or feminine objects it is ‘elles’. However, if there is a group of women plus just one man, the pronoun ‘ils’ is used.
Do they intend to take the matter up with the Academie Francaise, I wonder? I note also that the word ‘grammer’ appears on their website — I confess to enjoying my education at a grammar school many years ago, but I am reasonably confident that CMU needs a new proofreader.
