I’ve got you! Self less runner, ten, carries injured pal to race finish

- By Chris Brooke

WHEN ten-year-old Riley Watson suffered a painful stitch during a cross-country competition, he was certain his race was run.

But the crestfallen youngster hadn’t reckoned on his friend Julian Uto, who abandoned the chance to win so he could stop and help Riley.

Realising Riley couldn’t even stagger the last 20m of the 800m inter-schools race unaided, Julian, also ten, picked him up and carried him across the finishing line at the event in Grimsby. Julian, a schools sports ambassador who encourages others to get active, said: ‘I’d rather not have won and helped my friend than leave him.’

The selfless act in front of parents and staff from Allerton Primary School at nearby Immingham won praise from headteacher Amanda Turner.

She said the Year 5 pupil was one of the school’s young leaders who help younger children in class. Miss Turner added: ‘He is very caring. It’s wonderful. That’s our Julian for you!’
