It’s game over! Monopoly’s boot is replaced by a T-Rex
THEY are the much-loved board game pieces that have defined Monopoly for generations of players.
But the classic boot token has been given its marching orders – along with the thimble and wheelbarrow. Instead, families will now bicker over whether they want to play as a T-Rex, penguin or rubber duck in the next edition.
Last month US makers Hasbro asked fans to vote on new pieces – now gold – to bring the game into the modern age. Some 4.3million people from 146 countries selected from options that would have baffled players when the first game was developed in the 1930s – including a hashtag, mobile phone and emoji.
Traditionalists will be relieved to hear the Scottie dog, top hat and racing car were given a stay of execution. Jonathan Berkowitz, of Hasbro, said: ‘While I’m sad to see the thimble, boot, and wheelbarrow tokens go, it will be fun to have some new, fan-sourced tokens in the mix.’
