RED HOT TAMMY TAMES TERRIERS

- JAMES CANDY

BRISTOL CITY boosted their hopes of Championship survival and dented Huddersfield’s automatic promotion push with a stunning triumph at Ashton Gate. The visitors were shaken by a horror injury to Jonathan Hogg, who was treated on the pitch for 14 minutes after colliding with teammate Hudson in the first half.

And, soon after, Bristol City forward Lee Tomlin pounced on Hudson’s mistake to give Lee Johnson’s men a relegation lifeline.

Tammy Abraham made the most of the extended first half, showing his poacher’s instincts to steal in for his 22nd goal of the season. Centre half Aden Flint made sure of the win with 11 minutes to play and David Cotterill completed the rout with a late penalty to lift Bristol City out of the relegation zone and prevent Huddersfield closing the gap on the automatic promotion spots.

The match was just eight minutes old when key man Hogg collided with Terriers skipper Hudson. The midfielder received treatment on the pitch for what appeared to be a serious neck injury before he was carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Philip Billing.

Hogg was reported to be conscious and talking in the dressing room, before being taken to hospital for precautionary scans.

Hudson looked to be rattled by the incident when he made a crucial error to gift Bristol the lead. He gave the ball away and looked to have fouled Abraham, but the referee’s whistle never came. Tomlin reacted quickest to collect the loose ball and round goalkeeper Danny Ward before he side-footed into the empty net.

The fourth official displayed 14 minutes of added time at the end of the first half and Abraham took full advantage, scoring just before the half-time whistle. The 19-year- old striker, on loan from Chelsea, nipped in ahead of Christopher Schindler to divert Cotterill’s cross. Bristol City midfielder Callum O’Dowda headed against the bar after the restart, but the job was done with 10 minutes to go when Flint, who had come up for a free-kick and diverted Gary O’Neil’s shot into the net with a back-heel flick to make it 3-0.

Huddersfield midfielder Billing then pushed Joe Bryan in the box, and Cotterill fired into the top corner from the spot to put the icing on the cake.
