BIG MATCH ANALYSIS

- MARTIN KEOWN’S

SEIZE THE DAY, MARCUS

I AM delighted Marcus Rashford is getting the opportunity to start tonight. I cannot remember being as excited about a player for years. His pace embarrasses defenders and if Mats Hummels wants to get close to him then good luck! He is at a huge club but you don’t get the impression he is playing under any pressure at Manchester United. Everything looks second nature to him. If Rashford impresses, Gareth Southgate will have a dilemma over whether to pick the 19-year-old or Harry Kane up front in the future. I ADMIRE Southgate’s show of faith in Luke Shaw. Taking him to Germany should help to restore his confidence, especially if he gets on. Shaw has played rarely for United this season and it seems as if he is at loggerheads with Jose Mourinho. But Gareth should try to rekindle the player who was a flying machine down the left for previous club Southampton.

DON’T CONFUSE THINGS

IT sounds simple but one way Southgate can find success is by not playing players out of position. Against Germany in the last match at the old Wembley, Kevin Keegan played Gareth in central midfield and he wasn’t comfortable there. I also experienced it for England when I was played at left back against Holland. To give the players the best possible chance you have to put them in familiar positions.

PSENGLAND HAVEN’T LOST AWAY TO GERMANY FOR 30 YEARS!

JUST five members of the current England squad — Gary Cahill, Jermain Defoe, Joe Hart, Tom Heaton and Jamie Vardy — had been born the last time England lost to Germany in Germany, a 3-1 defeat in Dusseldorf in September 1987...
