England v Jose over Rashford

AIDY Boothroyd will meet Jose Mourinho to explain why England want to take Marcus Rashford to Euro 2017. The Manchester United manager is against Rashford playing for the Under 21s in Poland and voiced his misgivings as far back as last October.

Mourinho feels the 19-year-old is now a senior England player, given he played against Lithuania last Sunday and has not represented the Under 21s since gaining his only cap against Norway last September. But the FA are eager for Rashford to get more tournament experience and Boothroyd is planning to include the striker in his 23 for the tournament, which begins on June 16.

Boothroyd said: ‘I have not been to Manchester United yet to see Jose but I will be visiting all the clubs. I get on with Jose fine. He beat me a lot so I am probably one of the managers he likes!

‘Part of my role is to make sure the clubs are happy with what we do. And, at the end of the day, everything we do is centred on the players. It is about development and getting players through to the seniors. It will only help the clubs if we can help turn their players into good internationals.’ Rashford, who has made 43 appearances so far for club and country, could be in the senior squad for the World Cup qualifier in Scotland on June 10.

Boothroyd wants to have a training camp with the Under 21 squad before they head to their base in Kielce, most likely on June 12. The final of the tournament is on June 30 and United’s preseason tour starts against LA Galaxy on July 15

‘ It is important we work in tandem with the clubs because the players are theirs and they have commitments,’ added Boothroyd. ‘ But if we can get them in the camp for the Euros when we need them then we will be in a good place.’

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Mourinho will earn almost twice as much as Pep Guardiola this season. France Football claim the Portuguese will pocket an astonishing £24.2million, making him the highest-paid manager in the world.

Guardiola will earn £12.5m at Manchester City in salary, bonuses and commercial deals.

Mourinho has a salary of £15m a year but he also has a number of big-money endorsements with companies away from his day-today role at Old Trafford.
