Children f lee as f loods kill 250

- Mail Foreign Service

SOLDIERS carry children to safety yesterday after at least 250 people were killed when surging rivers sent an avalanche of floodwater and debris through a city in southern Colombia.

Homes were entombed under rocks, mud and trees from the rivers and rainforest that surround Mocoa, leaving it with no power and little drinking water.

Hundreds were injured and it is feared the death toll from Friday night’s disaster will rise.

President Juan Manuel Santos blamed climate change, saying Mocoa had had almost half the rainfall it usually gets in the whole of March in one night.
