Red Rum won in 1973, 1974 and 1977. Aldaniti and jockey Bob Champion overcame illness and hindrances to win once, in 1981; tipperary tim and William Dutton won once, in 1928, after the remaining 41 horses fell; and Dick Francis was fancied to win in 1956 when Devon Loch suddenly collapsed 40 yards from the finish line, prompting the horse’s owner, the Queen mother, to say: ‘Oh, that’s racing!’
