Driver admits killing two girls in hit-and-run

-

A DRIVER has pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of two girls in a hit-and-run on New Year’s Eve.

Gabor Hegedus, 38, smashed into cousins Zaneta Krokova, 11, and Helina Kotlarova, 12, as they crossed the road near their homes in Oldham. Helina was pronounced dead at the scene, while Zaneta died in hospital.

The Hungarian driver, who also lives in Oldham, admitted two counts of causing death by careless driving. He entered his guilty plea via an interpreter at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court as the girls’ families watched from the gallery.

Hegedus had already admitted perverting the course of justice by disposing of the Peugeot 807 he had been driving and falsely reporting it stolen.

He also admitted failing to stop after the accident and driving without a licence. Hegedus, who was remanded in custody, will be sentenced in June.
