BEFORE you begin, take the 30-second chair test, then repeat this test at the end of each week. It measures leg strength, endurance and balance. Sit on a dining room chair, your feet on the ground. Set a timer, and simply stand (without using your hands or arms), then sit again (gently) as many times as you can in 30 seconds. If you find this easy, progress to a softer, lower chair, which demands greater strength and balance to get up and down without support.
