Cutting the costs with a very DIY wedding

-

My youngest daughter, susanna, was the last of her friends to get married and had experienced the huge expense of today’s ‘hen weekends’ (Mail), so she decided to buck the trend. We had the hen night at home. sixteen of her friends came and each one brought a dish of something for the meal, plus a bottle. We hired a hot tub for the day and the garden was magically decorated with fairy lights. We played hilarious games and laughed all evening. Afterwards, some stayed for a sleepover while others went home by taxi and they all agreed it was one of the best hen nights ever. Amateur cake maker Clare stewart from our village made her a cake in the shape of a hen and, as susanna is a shepherdess with her own flock of sheep, also made her a wedding cake in a sheep shape. susanna is also the lead singer in a couple of bands and her husband, Alex, is a professional guitarist. they perform as a duo called two For Joy. the wedding for 120 guests was held in the village hall, which we decorated ourselves. We had an excellent caterer and a brilliant wedding, with susanna and Alex performing with the live band. susanna’s dress was made by Dig For Victory of Brighton. the whole day cost only about £8,000.
