CRUISING TO THE EDGE
Whatever your perception of cruise holidays, it’s time to open your mind to the future of holidaying at sea, as we share a first look at the revolutionary Celebrity Edge
EVERY so often a catwalk show comes along and completely changes fashion, or a new car transforms the world of automotive design. Now, a breathtaking new ship is being built which will set a whole new standard for holidays at sea.
Setting sail in December 2018, Celebrity Edge will change the way we think about cruising, taking modern architecture and design and challenging the traditional view of how a cruise ship should look and feel.
Imagine some of the most beautiful contemporary buildings you’ve admired in glossy magazines, with their seamless use of state-of-the-art materials and ability to intrigue the eye with elegant, minimal styling. Now picture that concept translated into a revolutionary cruise ship, and you’re some way to envisaging the future of ocean-going escapes. Created to push the boundaries of luxury cruise travel, Edge combines the creative vision of celebrated architect Tom Wright of WKK and internationally renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen, MBE, of Kelly Hoppen Interiors, whose collaborative efforts will result in one of the most awe-inspiring vessels on earth.
Celebrity Edge’s resort deck will boast a stunning rooftop garden: the perfect place for guests to enjoy games and activities through the day, in the evenings it will be home to live music and the outdoor movie-and-meal pairing of ‘A Taste of Film’.
A network of aerial jogging tracks and elevated sun decks offers spectacular vistas, while the stunning asymmetrical resort-style pool area is overlooked by a modernist mirror installation.
Celebrity Edge’s extraordinary Magic Carpet, majestically situated on the starboard side of the ship, will be the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform: the size of a tennis court, it will move between and open up to a number of decks, up to 13 storeys above sea level. Guests will enjoy uninterrupted views as they relax on this dramatic platform, with dining options, bar and live music.
Of course, a key part of any holiday is accommodation, and the 2,918-guest Celebrity Edge will offer contemporary staterooms that completely rethink the concept of the classic ship’s cabin. All suites and double occupancy Edge Staterooms will feature exclusively designed plush king-size cashmere mattresses – an industry first – and offer personal butler services and access to The Retreat, a private sanctuary with pool and restaurant.
Erasing the boundaries between accommodation and veranda, the spacious new Edge Staterooms with Infinite Veranda add 23 per cent more square footage and ten per cent larger bathrooms than Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice Class. The simple touch of a button will offer open-air access to the sea, transforming guest quarters into a seamless space with a closer connection to the ocean.
SLUMBER IN SOPHISTICATED STYLE
In addition, a pair of two-bedroom, two-bathroom 2,600sq ft Iconic Suites, situated above the ship’s bridge, feature panoramic windows enveloping the dining room, living room and bedrooms, plus 700sq ft verandas with 270-degree views of the ocean.
Six split-level Edge Villas will offer stunning views from two storeys of windows, private plunge pools and direct walk-out access to The Retreat Sundeck. Hoppen also designed a duo of two-bedroom, two-bathroom Penthouse Suites with soaking tubs on the veranda, walk-through showers and expansive walk-in closets, plus the 146 large, outward-facing Sky Suites.
