I thought this job would be easier ... I miss my old life, admits Trump

- From Tom Leonard in New York

he is happy to have a new red button on his oval office desk to summon a butler bearing a can of Coke.

But for the most part, Donald Trump misses his old life, admitting he thought being the US President ‘would be easier’.

he feels restricted in his closely protected ‘cocoon’ and regrets no longer being able to drive himself.

Mr Trump offered his surprisingly candid reflections on his new life in an interview to mark his first 100 days in office today.

‘I loved my previous life – I had so many things going,’ said the billionaire New York property tycoon. ‘This is more work than in my previous life. I thought it would be easier.’

even with fellow republicans controlling both houses of Congress, Mr Trump has come up hard against the reality of governing and trying to get his election pledges into law.

Insiders say his frustration and feeling of isolation in the White house has been compounded by pundits giving him low marks for the first 100 days of his presidency.

he also used his interview with the reuters news agency to mention rising tensions over North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme, saying he hoped that the repressive nation’s dictator Kim Jong-un is ‘rational’.

With a US naval force steaming towards the region and Pyongyang threatening nuclear retaliation if provoked, Mr Trump insisted he wanted to resolve the crisis peacefully.

But he warned: ‘There is a chance that we could end up having a major, major conflict with North Korea – absolutely. We’d love to solve things diplomatically but it’s very difficult.’

Turning to his private life, he revealed he is still surprised at how little time he has to himself under 24-hour Secret Service protection.

‘You’re really into your own little cocoon because you have such massive protection that you really can’t go anywhere,’ he said.

Ferried around in the back of an armoured limousine or SUV, Mr Trump said he missed getting behind the wheel. ‘I like to drive – I can’t drive any more,’ he added.

he boasted during the election campaign about all he would accomplish in his first 100 days, but he has failed to get the big items on his wish list through Congress.

These include the repeal of obamacare, financing for a Mexican border wall, huge government spending cuts and a $1trillion infrastructure investment programme.

Supporters say he has been marginally more successful abroad, launching a missile strike on Syria, withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement and increasing pressure on North Korea to end its nuclear weapons programme.

Mr Trump now says it is ‘ridiculous’ to judge a president after 100 days.
